Cala Gonone began as sleepy fishing village on the eastern coast of Sardinia. The coast boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean lined with calcareous cliff walls which reflect on the transparent and turquoise-coloured sea. The area marks the famous Bue Marino caves, which last hosted the now-gone Monk Seal. The white-coloured calcareous seabed magnifies the transparency of the water and intensifies its colour. The Gulf of Orosei is the ideal place: To practise water sports, take a kayak excursion surrounded by blue seas and skies and peaceful silence, do some scuba diving and search out the rich seabed or explore some ancient shipwrecks, or to simply rediscover an uncontaminated sea. However, your day may be completed with an excursion towards the inland and the exploration of Gorroppu - the deepest European Canyon, or a visit to Tiscali - the ancient nuragic village in the heart of a mountain. One may choose to visit Orgosolo - displaying its famous murals and depicting everyday country life, Ispinigoli's grotto where one may view majestic stalagmites. The map signals some of the more important spots not to be missed. The Sardinian culture and traditions which today still exist and thrive in this town make Cala Gonone even more interesting to those who wish to discover local traditions. |
